How to Write a Position Statement

What is a position statement?

A position statement is written to provide direction for an organization. Position statements written for CNSA must reflect the governing objectives and goals of CNSA.

How do I write a position statement?

  1. Prior to the development of a position statement, look at emerging issues in nursing and healthcare that have an impact on nursing students and that would be important for CNSA to take a position on the issue.
  2. Complete a thorough research and review of information available through national and provincial/territorial stakeholders and other key stakeholders related directly to the issue. (i.e. The Toronto Disaster Relief Committee is a key resource for a position statement related to Homelessness and Affordable Housing)
  3. Write a statement that provides a description, with the support of evidence, of the position that CNSA is taking on the issue.  The statement should include a background of the issue. Communicate with the Board of Directors throughout the process of the development of the position statement. Position statements can be revised and reviewed at any point in time to support the increase of evidence related to the issue.
  4. Have the document reviewed by key informants that are knowledgeable of the issue.  Provide the reviewers with a feedback form.
  5. Present the position statement to the Board of Directors and National Assembly for final approval.
