CNSA Statement on the killing of Minnesota Nurse Alex Pretti

The Canadian Nursing Students’ Association (CNSA) extends our deepest condolences to the family, loved ones, and colleagues of Alex Pretti, RN. We are profoundly saddened by this tragic loss and join the nursing community in mourning a life taken far too soon.

As nursing students, we look to nurses not only as caregivers, but as mentors, leaders, and the foundation of our healthcare system. When violence touches our profession, it is felt deeply across the nursing community, not only in grief, but in the urgent reminder that those who provide care must be met with safety, dignity, and respect.

We acknowledge the immense pain experienced by Mr. Pretti’s loved ones and the profound loss carried by his colleagues and community.

Across our communities and across borders, nursing students are learning, alongside nurses, what it means to show up for one another and for our patients every day. Our profession is rooted in compassion, courage, and collective care. In moments of tragedy, we are reminded that strength comes not only from what we do individually, but from how we stand together, especially when speaking out is difficult, but necessary.

We stand in solidarity with nurses, healthcare workers, and learners in the United States during this profoundly difficult time.

We remain, as the national voice of Canadian nursing students, committed to advocating for a future where every nursing student, nurse and healthcare worker can provide care in environments free from violence; grounded in compassion, safety, accountability, and respect for the inherent value of human life.

In remembrance and solidarity, the CNSA joins the Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions (CFNU) in encouraging Canadian nurses, nursing students, and allies to participate in the National Nurses United candlelight vigil on Wednesday, January 28th at 7:30 P.M., whether virtually, in spirit, or by simply lighting a candle in our homes.

Together, we honor Alex’s life, mourn this profound loss, and reaffirm our shared commitment to peace, justice, and safety for all who provide care.
